Our Residential Program
Shifra Homes is a maternity residence and resource centre located in Burlington, Ontario that supports young, homeless, pregnant women in the Halton Region.
We accept young pregnant women between the ages of 16 and 27. We are the only maternity residence in all of Halton.
Our need in the community is predicated by statistics showing that there are over 200 teenage pregnancies in Halton every year.
Our Services Include:
Perinatal Care & Parenthood Prep
Our residents work with midwives, doulas, public health nurses, and family home visitors pre- and post-delivery throughout their entire stay at Shifra Homes.
Art Therapy Sessions
We have partnered with The Art Gallery of Burlington to provide art therapy at the Home once a month for our current and previous residents.
Student Placement Support
We have several students completing their placement at our Home throughout the year. These students come from diverse backgrounds and life experiences, and bring their expertise to Shifra Homes to assist our residents with their various goals and challenges.
Our staff continuously monitor our residents to assist in their growth and development during their time at Shifra Homes.
Life Skills Training
We teach our residents how to cook, do laundry, clean, nurture and take care of their baby, budget and save, and more during their stay at our Home.
In collaboration with the YMCA of Hamilton/ Burlington/Brantford, we have been able to provide weekly employment workshops on-site over a duration of 2 months for each new group of residents.
Seeds of Hope Program
Residents are able to apply for the Seeds of Hope Program following their discharge, which provides them continued access to financial support, donations, and counselling if they are working towards a goal such as school or work.
We connect with adoption agencies such as Beginnings when a young woman chooses to give her child up for adoption. Support is provided throughout the pregnancy as well as after baby is born and adopted.
Financial Support and Workshops
We assist our residents with applying and receiving support and assistance from OW or ODSP if they are not working, ensure they have active bank accounts, and teach them budgeting skills while they reside at our Home.
Our residents have routine Service Coordinations completed during their stay at Shifra Homes with their supports and agency workers present at each one. This allows them to work on their goals with full support and encouragement.
Last year was our first year with a psychotherapist who came weekly on-site to visit individually and in group sessions with our residents. With this program, we are able to ensure our residents' mental health needs are met and they aren't put on waiting lists to receive the support and help that they require or need.
Halton Prenatal Nutrition Program
Our residents attend the weekly program offered by Halton Region as they prepare for their new child to be born.
What to Expect
Our Residential Program does have mandatory programming, workshops, and expectations that need to be followed and they include the following:
We have these expectations set up to create a sense of routine for our residents, and teach them life skills regarding time management while also providing them with useful programs for themselves and their children's growth and development.
